I spent much of today on Avery Island which isn’t an island. It’s actually one of five salt domes in the area which were called islands because they are higher than the surrounding bayous so they looked like islands from a distance. I took the factory tour, which is self-guided, includes lots of quite well produced one to two minute films, a lot of their history, a lot of appreciation for what they’ve done here – including conservation efforts, economic growth, employee loyalty – and about what they do to keep the company prospering. The factory itself is mostly a very attractive brick building (there’re more standard modern buildings attached). They’ve done a great job of showing how this family owned company, conceived by an ancestor during the Reconstruction Era after https://rafhael.org/ his bank failed, has grown to an international company selling in 185 countries (they label in 22 languages). They show what each family member who has run the company brought to it (examples: one brought science to checking quality, one brought innovative advertising). They seem to have been, and to be, very progressive in their company and they are justifiably proud of what they’ve done.
There are a couple different stories of where the original peppers came from but they agree on one thing – they were from Mexico. These are those viciously hot, thin, little, bright red peppers. Peppers, vinegar and salt is all tabasco is – plus up to three years of fermenting in barrels (apparently former bourbon barrels) – and, walla, Tabasco Sauce. Although they do apparently grow some of the peppers on Slot Online Avery Island, most grow in Central and South America and in Africa. In all cases, they crush the peppers the day picked, add salt and then transport them here to be fermented and, eventually, bottled and shipped out. They also produce mini-bottles of Tabasco, most notably used in MRE’s for our armed forces.
The company sells a huge variety of Tabasco related merchandise. I was able to avoid Tabasco lollipops, ice cream and chocolate. I also didn’t buy Tabasco neckties or guitar picks. But they are here, plus much more, if you ever feel the need for them. Interestingly, they also allow salt mining on their island by another family-owned company, albeit one from Minneapolis (that would be Cargill). I assume that this is the source of much of the salt they use in their product.
I also visited their formal garden called the Jungle Gardens. This isn’t quite as manicured as an English garden, but in places it is close. As there are many types of bamboo at various places, I suspect it might take as much work as an English garden. Bamboo Situs Slot Online is a plant which is serious about growing. They say they bring some in from alligator farms. I suspect that, for insurance purposes, they trade away their big ones to those same farms because something about being a tourist makes many otherwise sane people crazy. I swear warnings, signage, and certainly common sense mean nothing to tourists seeking a picture with any wild animal. I recall hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park when I met a woman carrying a slice of bread.
